ABSTRACT
The
study investigated the effect of organisational structure on the performance of
tertiary institution: A study ofInstitute ofManagement and Technology Enugu.
Data for the study was gathered through primary and secondary sources. Data
were obtainedfrom 328 staff ofIMT Enugu using a structured questionnaire.
Descriptive statistics like mean scores and inferential statistic like T-test
and Anova F-test were used to analyze the data gathered for the study. The
study found out that IMT is structured in such a way thatfunctions are divided
into departments, courses are structured into departments andprogrammes,
Institute management commands line movesfrom the rector to the both academic
and non-academic staffs etc. The design oforganizational structure influences
operational efficiency ofInstitute ofmanagement and technology Enugu. Another
robustfinding ofthe study is that to a high extent organizational structure
influenced the performance of staff of IMT Enugu in executing their functions.
Structure of Institute of Management and Technology Enugu helps them to
mobilize and retain their students.The hypotheses tested in the study were done
at 5% significance level. The result showed that There is no significant
difference in the mean scores of academic and non-academic staff responses on
how Institute of Management and Technology Enugu are structured. Design of
organizational structure significantly influence worker’s operational
efficiency. Organizational structure significantly influences the performance
ofInstitute ofManagement and Technology Enugu employees in executing
theirfunctions and that structure ofInstitute ofManagement and Technology Enugu
significantly helps them to mobilize and retain their students. This study
concluded that organizational structure affects the performance of tertiary
institutions. The study recommends that favorable organizational structure
should be the priority of management and staff of IMT Enugu in sustaining the
performance of the institution in general
