Effect Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On The Duration Of Weed Interference In Sweetpotato (Ipomoea Batatas [L.J Lam) On An Ultisol At Umudike, South-Eastern Nigeria.
ABSTRACT
Field studies were
conducted at the Researc1 Farm of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI)
Umudike in South-eastern Nigeria in the 2005 and 2006 cropping seasons to
investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on the duration of weed
interference in Sweet potato (Jponioea batatas) on an ultjsol at Umudjke,
South-eastern Nigeria. The experiment was set up as a split plot in a
Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), using three replications. Sweet potato
was planted at 100x30 cm on the crest of well prepared ridges. The main plot
treatments consisted of three rates of nitrogen fertilizer, namely 0, 60 and 90
kg N/ha applied as Urea. The sub- plot treatments consisted of 10 levels of
duration of weed interference before weed removal, starting from 0 (weed-free),
1 ,2 , 3, 4 ,5 , 6 , 7 and 8 weeks of weed interference and unweeded
treatments. Data on weed density, weed dry matter were collected using two 1 m
x 1 m quadrats. Leaf area and vine length were measured by using meter rule.
Yield and yield components were collected by 50 kg weighing balance. Data
collected were subjected to analysis of variance .Means separation were carried
out using standard error of difference .The results obtained over the two years
indicate that sweet potato produced optimum total yield, weight of saleable
(marketable) roots and total number of roots at 60 kg N/ha. On the other hand,
