Insecticidal Activities Of Some Medicinal Plant Extracts Against The Whitefly, Bemisia Tabaci (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) Infesting Orange Fleshed Sweetpotato Umudike, Abia State Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Field experiment was conducted at National Root Crops Research Institute NRCRI) Umudike Abia State during the 2015 cropping season to determine the efficacy of extracts of Rhizomes of ginger and leaves of pawpaw. Moringa and neem against sweetpotato whiteflies, Bern isia tabaci. A synthetic insecticides (Diazinon) and an untreated control plot were used as checks. The result showed that all the treatments significantly ) reduced the population of B. tabaci when compared with the untreated control. However, extracts of A. indica and Diazinon proved most effective at controlling the populations of B. tabaci (2.33) by recording significantly lower population of whitefly. The yield in the protected plots were significantly higher than the unprotected control plots (P<0.05). The highest marketable weight (4.17kg/ha) was recorded by plot treated with the synthetic insecticide followed by those sprayed Moringa which recorded 2.30kg/ha. It is recommended that these plant extracts be incorporated into the integrated pest management for the control of B. tabaci infesting orangefleshed sweetpotato.>
