ABSTRACT
This
study is on the effect of manpower planning and development on organizational
performance with reference to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Umuahia, Abia
State. Beyond the broad objective, the study seeks to ascertain the effect of
manpower planning and development on the performance of their employees, find
out the effect of manpower planning and development on organizational
performance and find out factors militating against manpower planning and
development in Enugu Electricity Distribution Company among others. The
researcher employed survey research design, primary and secondary sources of
data was used. The study population was the total employees ofthe organization
which was 167, using Taro Yamen’sformula the sample size was deduced to be 119,
while 100 questionnaires was well filled and returned which formed the basis
ofthe data analysis. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation
and Logistic Regression Analysis was used to analyzed and test the hypotheses
posited. The majorfindings revealed that At P>0.01 level ofsignificance,
manpower planning and development has a strong positive effect on employees’
performance in the organization with correlation coefficient of(r = 0.813), and
on the organization’s performance with correlation coefficient of(r = 0.9.15).
Lack ofresources, lack oftop management support and working condition among
others, are the major factors militating against manpower planning and
development in Enugu Electricity Distribution Company. The researcher concluded
that employees training and development is prerogative to organizationalsuccess
and peipetual existence, and recommends that the organization should explore
and enhance the potential oftheir employees through adequate training and
developmental programmes in order to maintain motivated and dedicated
employees. The need for top managements of the organization to support the
training and developmental programmes of the organization and create enabling
work environment that breeds and nurture training as one ofthe requirements for
organizational goal attainment was also emphasized.
