ABSTRACT

The study investigates the effect of effective management strategy on organizational performance (A study ofselected Supermarket in Umuahia Abia State, Nigeria). The specific objectives are to; determine the effect of effective strategic planning on organizational performance; ascertain the relationship between effective management strategy and organizational performance; analyze the factors affecting implementation of effective management strategy in the selected supermarkets and to identify the strategies adopted to enhance organization performance. A total 77 population were used in the study. The study adopted survey design and random sampling technique and 74 questionnaire were recouped from the study. Primary data sourced from distribution of questionnaires to 74 staffofthe selected Supermarket in Umuahia Abia State, Nigeria were usedfor the study. A test-re-test was conducted to ensure validity and reliability ofthe data. The data were presented using 5 point Likert scale. The hypotheses were tested using correlation coefficient and Chi-square (SPSS). The result reveal that 75.7%, 74.32% and 66.2% ofthe respondents strongly agree that timely planning, long-term planning and prompt coordination affects organizational performance to a very large extent. In addition, 55.4%, 54.1% and 47.3% strongly agree that lack of information, low level of employee education and capital has a significant impact on implementation of effective management strategy in the selected supermarkets. The empirical result shows that there is positive relationship between effective management strategy and organizational performance in selected supermarkets in Umuahia Abia Stale, Nigeria. There is positive relationship between effective strategic planning and organizational performance in selected supermarkets in Umuahia Abia Stale, Nigeria. More so, since Chi-square (X2) calculated = 42.3187 and Chi-square (X2) tabulated = 36.415 in effect, management policy, capital, lack of information, low level of employee education, advanced technology, competition, number of employees have significant influence on effective implementation of strategic management in the selected supermarkets. Finally, employee training, environmental scanning, promotional packages, effective advertisement are significant strategies adopted to enhance organization performance in the selected Supermarket in Umuahia Abia State, Nigeria. It was recommended that the management ofthe selected supermarkets must strictly adhered to the implementation of management strategy in order to be outstanding in its performance (i.e. competitive advantage) and therefore stay afloat in the dynamic competitive environment since there exist a positive relationship between effective management strategy and organizational performance.
