Development And Performance Evaluation Of A Mini Steam Boiler For Palm Fruit Processing

ABSTRACT

 Digesters used in small scale palm oil processing do not have systems that will generate and inject steam inside the digester unit to maintain the temperature of the palm fruit during the digestion operation. Thus, this study developed a modified mini steam boiler which generates and injects steam to the digester and hot water to the screw press of a modified integrated machine used for processing palm oil. The system comprises 01 a fiber glass lagged boiler shell, pressure gauge, thermometer, flow control valve, mild steel pipes and water level indicator. The system Performance evaluation shows that the control valve opened at 15°, steam at 12 psi and 108°C is supplied to the digester unit, and it will take approximately 8.3 hours to completely evaporate 18 liters converted to steam. The thermal efficiency of' the system is about 85%, and the cost of developing the system is two hundred and four thousand naira (N204.000)onlv.
