ABSTRACT

Mining of mineral ore started with an age long mortar and pestle technology. Consequently, the technology grows into a more sophisticated methodology with improved pulverization and efficient milling. However, hammer mill technology amongst other mills have achieved great merit in sub-Saharan Africa because of its simplicity, efficiency, economic cost quantity, viability and low maintenance cost. The design of this mill is in consideration to environmental factors which are critical to national development. The abetment of dust generation consequently, was cardinal to the development of the mill. From the study, 0.080kg of kaolin, milled from a 50kg was recaptured by the dust arrestor. These would have been dispensed to the atmosphere as dust particles and would have contributed greatly to increasing cosmic dust of the environment. Also, 49.932kg deposit at the cyclone for discharge from the same quantity of milled kaolin account for efficient mechanization introduced by cyclonical condensation movement of the milled product and its condensation of the milled product. The mill with an operating capacity of 1.2 tons per hour is stable, compact, viable, and affordable with a calculated milling efficiency of 80%. This obviously indicated that the system fabricated is very efficient for milling mineral ores especially the kaolin.
