ABSTRACT
A 500VA, single phase 240/12V power transformer was
designed, fabricated utilizing our local raw material (mild steel), in order to
ascertain the possibility of producing our own locally made transformers. Open
and short circuit test carried out on this transformer yielded an efficiency of
75.69%, despite the difficulties encountered in the course of its production.
Comparing the above efficiency with that of international standard of about 85%
efficiency shows that transformers could be produced here in Nigeria. However,
in line with our research, much higher efficient transformers could be realized
if our raw materials are improved considerably alongside making readily
available the necessary production equipment.
