ABSTRACT

This thesis summarizes the electrical-thermal coupling of induction machine for performance improvement. The interaction of the electrical and mechanical parts leads to an increase in temperature which if not properly monitored may lead to breakdown of the machine. The project therefore, set out to study the effect of electrical and thermal model ofthe machine. A two-mass system is used to model the mechanical part of the machine. The system of nonlinear ordinary differential equation and algebraic equations describes the thermal behaviour ofthe machine in transient and steady-state respectively which were solved numerically using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and Gauss-Seidel method respectively. MATLAB mfiles were developed and were used to solve both the fourth-order Runge-Kutta and GaussSeidel methods for both transient and steady-state respectively. The thermal resistances and capacitances were determined and calculated with the help of purely dimensional information from the machine geometry and constant thermal coefficients and their values were accepted as inputs by the MATLAB m-files. The result shows a steady-state hot-spot at the stator winding part ofthe machine when both coupled and uncoupled. The rotor iron and bar attains a peak temperature of229°C when coupled while the stator winding attains a peak temperature of 342°C when uncoupled.
