ABSTRACT
In this project, a wireless local
area networking technique was designed, which is intended for use in providing
internet service to all the offices in Electrical/Electronics Engineering
Department in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. A full review
ofthe current wireless local communications protocols 802.11, 802.11a and
Bluetooth is presented. A detailed comparison of these techniques was performed
with Bluetooth system and a Wi-Fi system. The Wi-Fi technology was chosen as
the most suitable protocol for the sharing of internet service within a
specified environment where physical elements posed a challenge on free space
propagation of signals and also where cabling is difficult and remotely connect
devices or network. The last part of the paper includes some experimental
testing results and analysis. Through experimental measurements, we demonstrate
that the modified indoor network devices can be effective alternatives for the
expensive outdoor devices in an outdoor WLAN design. By increasing the transmit
power and antenna height, the wireless internet design overcomes the huge path
loss due to foliage. We also evaluate the performance of wireless internet
service in different weathers. Finally, with a local area network, designed and
implemented for the new extended office blocks in Electrical/Electronic
Engineering Department, the lecturers or researchers will have the best possibility
to improve their work and it will also increase the efficiency ofresearch work
in the institution.
