Comparative Growth Rates Of Clarias Gariepinus And Heterobranclius Fed With Commercial Feed (Coppens) Of 40% Crude Protein Under Laboratory Condition
ABSTRACT
A comparative study on growth rate of Clarias gariepinus and Heterobranchus long jflhis fingerlings was investigated under laboratory condition in plastic basin. They were fed with commercial formulated feed (Coppens) of 40% crude protein at 5% fish biomass per day for a period of 12 weeks (84 days). Measurement was conducted at every two weeks interval (2,4,6,8,10 and 12 respectively). Bi-weekly mean total length, weight were used to investigate the growth rate and survival rate of the both species. Clarias species of initial mean length of 5.77cm and weight of 3.23g and Heterobranchus species of initial mean length of 5.78cm and weight of 3.24g attained the mean final total length of 13.50cm and weight of 15.45g of Clarias gariepinus while Herterobranchus attained final mean length of 15.31cm and weight of 50.91g respectively. The percentage survival rate of Clarias gariepinus was 84.17% and Heterobrachus 93.3%. The experiment lasted for 12 weeks. The evaluation of the growth parameters showed that there was significant difference (P<0.05) in mean weight, mean length, specific growth rates and survival rates while there have the same level of food conversion ratio and efficiency of 0.65 and 153.7% of both species throughout the culture period.
