ABSTRACT
This study investigated the "Assessment of teachers'
conditions of service and influence on regularity to class in public secondary
schools in Abia State Nigeria". Jour research questions and three
hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. 'l'hc design
of the work was a descriptive survey design. Students' t-test statistic was
used to test the opinions of the male and female teachers on the assessment of
teachers' conditions of service and influence on regularity to class in public
Secondary Schools in Abia State. The total population was 3,855 teachers in
Abia State public secondary school from which a sample of 1,542 teachers which
is 40% of the total population was di'a'n usin strati lied random sampling
technique. The instrument titled AS'I'COSARECQ as constructed by the researcher
and validated by three experts, each from Educational Administration and
Planning, Measurement and Evaluation, and Psychology and Counselling in Michael
Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. Cronbach Alpha was used to compute
the internal consistency reliability co-efficient of the instrument and the
reliability coefficient obtained was 0.85. The data was analyzed using mean,
standard deviation and pooled mean to answer the 4 research questions posed.
The findings revealed to a high extent that, prompt payment of teachers
salaries, regular promotion, payment of allowances and payment of terminal
benefits, in return influence teachers regularity to class in public secondary
schools in /\hia state. The recommendation was that payments of secondary
school teachers salaries. bonuses, allowances and retirement packages should be
improved and should he pak promptly and as at when due and that teachers should
be regularly promoted to enhance their regularity to class in public secondary
schools in Abia State.
