ABSTRACT
This Study
investigated compensation administration and task performance of Public
Secondary School Teachers in Imo State. A correlational research design was
employed for the study. Five research questions were raised and five null
hypotheses were formulated to guide the study which was tested at 0.05 level
ofsignificance. The total of 6641 teachers and 288 principals formed the
population of the study. The sampled population for the study was 664 teachers
and 28 principals. A 26 item questionnaire was designed using the linkert scale
model and validated by three experts in the Department of Science Education and
Department of Education Management. The reliability ofthe instrument was
determined using Cronback Alpha method and yielded a coefficient of 0.816. The
data collected were analyzed using linear regression statistic. Result ofthe
findings indicated that Non-payment ofteachers' salary, non-promotion of
teachers as at when due, Non-provision of Transportation allowance, Housing
allowance and Leave allowance constitute a negative factor to teachers task
performance in Imo State. Result further indicated that there was a significant
relationship between Payments of salaries, promotion as at when due, transportation
allowances, housing allowances, leave allowances and teachers’ task performance
in Imo State Public Secondary Schools. The educational implications of the
study shows that inadequacy in the provision of regular payment of salary,
promotion as at when due; provision of transportation allowance, housing
allowances and leave allowance would cause an adverse effect on teachers’ task
performance. Consequently, this situation may lead to low productivity,
disillusionment among the secondary school teachers, resignation and trade
dispute between the teachers and the government. The study, hence recommended
that The Imo State Government should show more interest in the welfare of their
teachers by providing adequate and regular payment ofsalary in order to enhance
their level of task performance. The Government should promote teachers as at
when due at least once in three years or even two years. Promotion is important
as it enhances their level oftask performance. Finally, the government should
make provision for transportation, housing and leave allowances for as this
serve as a recognition which will translate to enhanced teachers’ task
performance
