ABSTRACT
This study presents the results of the experimental and
mechanical assessment and investigation of periwinkle shell (pws) for use as
reinforcement additive in grindstone. Locally sourced periwinkle shell was
sourced and washed thoroughly to remove impurities. Further impurities were
removed by hand picking. After which the periwinkle shell was sundried for 2
months to make it dry and free from moisture. The periwinkle shell was then
crushed with a periwinkle grinding machine into fine particle. The periwinkle
was sieved to get a particle size of 1.40mm. The sand and gravel used in this
work was also sieved to get particle size (1.40mm). The cement used in this
work is Ordinary Portland cement (opc) which is grey in colour. The cement,
water, sand, grounded periwinkle and aggregate was mixed according to design
proportion. Eight proportion consisting of Sample A (.34% of water,7.63 of
sand,36.69% of cement,32.45% of fine aggregate andl4.49% of periwinkle), Sample
B (7.63% of water,9.13% of sand, 36.69% of cement, 32.45% of fine aggregate and
7.43% of eriwinkle shell) ETC. were produced and their mechanical
properties(hardness, compressive strength, tensile strength and water
absorption) were evaluated. The results showed that hardness, and compressive
increased in Sample C irrespective of the replacement with periwinkle shell had
the optimal result.
