Acute Toxicity Of Gramoxone (Paraquat Dichloride) To The Fresh Water Catfish: Clarias Gariepinus (Burcii) Post Fingerlings.
ABSTRACT
Carias gariepimis post fingerlings ranging Ibm 3.0 to 4.1 g ± ).08 S.F. were subjected to 20ppm, 40ppm, 60 1:m, 30ppm and I 00ppm of gramoxone for 9 hours static bioassay. 'ftc median lethal con'ntratiofl (LC50) value of gramoxone for C/arias gariepimis poc fingerlings was 44.67ppm and a safe concentration of 4.47ppin. '1'he fish species showed several abnoiniai behaviours which included restlessness, arena rnoveme'is, lOSS of equilibrium, strong spasm, paralysis and sodality quick movement during the exposure. The elièct of the treatment on some b1od parameters analyses showed decrease in haemoglobin vah' (6.9 to 6.Og), hacmatocrit value (26. 6 to 6%), red blood ccli coun (67 x i0 to 1.3 x 10 5mm3) white blood cell coun(6.7 to 2.0 mm3 ), increase in mean corpuscular hacrnoglobin(10.29 to 19.43 pgcell') and mean coruscuIar haemoglobin concentration(32.56 to 3162% ). Gramoxone treated groups also showed significant increase in mean copnscu1ar volume (P<0.05) and later decreased at the higliei concentration of the pesticide(3 1 .53 to 58.08 to 30.4jtm3). The causes of alteration in blood parameters are discussed.
