Supply Responses Of Staple Food Crops In Nigeria (1990-2005)

ABSTRACT

This research work was carried out to find out the supply responses of staple food crops in Nigeria Agriculture from 1990-2005. The objective centered on estimating the trend of staple food crop in Nigeria and to also ascertain the extent to which the determinant affect output response of staple food crops in Nigeria. Secondary data was used. The data used for this work were obtained through available information from the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) annual reports and statements of accounts, National Bureau of statistics (NBS) and other financial and economics reviews, and FAO statistics database. One of the research objectives was realized using the exponential or log linear trend or what is variously called the "left side semi-log" analysis in modeling the trends of supply (output) of staple food crops in Nigeria while the objective two achieved using multiple regression models. It was revealed that output and time were all positive and significant at 1% level. In the regression results, labour, fertilizer and land area cultivated were significant, at various levels. However, land had a negative coefficient. Among other things, the study recommended that Fertilizer subsoil be maintained, and farmers be educated on the use o1 fertilizer. It also recommended that more extension agents be trained and deployed to the rural areas
