ABSTRACT

One hundred urine samples were collected from Michael Okpara University Clinic to determine the incidence of Streptococcal urinary tract infection in adult. The urine sample was subjected to laboratory analysis to isolate the organism and antibiotic sensitivity profile of the isolate was determined using disc diffusion method. Out of the 100 urine samples collected only 7(7%) produced streptococcal growth whiles the remaining 93(93%) did not produce growth. Antibiotic sensitivity test was carried out and these 6(85.7%) isolates were sensitive to ofloxacin, 5(71.4%) isolates were sensitive to Nalidixic acid, 3(42.8%) isolates were sensitive to Gentamycin and 7(100%) to Nitrofurantoin. The 7 isolates were resistance to tetracycline and Amoxicillin and as such did not produce any zone of inhibition. It was discovered that the rate of Streptococcal UTI on the patient attending MOUAU clinic at the time of the research is low (7%).
