The Influence of Deprivation Of Widows Inheritance Rights On The Training Of Their Children In Some Selected Local Government Areas (Ohafia, Umuahia South) In Abia State.
ABSTRACT
The study was designed to determine the
influence of deprivation of widow's inheritance on the training of their
children in the selected Local Government Areas (Ohafia, and Umuahia South) in
Abia state. A total of 210 respondents were selected using simple random
sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was ied to determine their
socio-economic status and information on the respondents widowhood experiences,
effect of deprivation on child training and strategies for eliminating harmful
widowhood practices. The results showed that most of the respondents
ifl(liCated that they were denied access to their husbands' houses (56.6%),
farmland (55%) and bank account (6! .3%). Disinheritance of landed properties
was affirmed by more than half (54.2 %) of the respondents. Also, majority
(72.5%) of the respondents were left alone to cater for the children and only
few (42.2%) of them agreed they were sent out of the family for not having a
male child. Results further revealed that majority (67.9%) of the respondents
ièlt that the child's moral, educational, nutritional and health status were
affected by deprivation of widows inheritance rights. Also information on the
strategies for alleviating widowhood harmful traditional practices revealed
that majority of the respondents believed that public interventions like policy
making (91.1%), women empowerment through education (8 1 .7%) sensitization
(94%) and will writing (62%) would help alleviate harmful widowhood traditional
practices.
