The Effect Of Variety On Profitability And Technical Efficiency Of Cassava Farmers In Umuahia South Local Government Area Of Abia State
ABSTRACT
The study employed a budgetary
equation of profitability analysis and the additive multiplicative dummy
variable to evaluate the effect of variety on the profitability and technical
efficiency of cassava farmers in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia
State. Cassava variety was grouped into the improved and the local variety. A
random but purposive sampling technique was used to select 50 respondents from
each of the. cassava variety groups, giving a total of 100 respondents. The
study found that the production of both the improved and the local variety were
profitable, although the improved variety gave a higher net income of
N72,909.42 compared to N24,860.38 derived from the local variety. The quantity
of cassava stems cultivatcd and the labour used are factors that positively and
significantly affected technical efficiency at 10% and 1% level of
significance, respectively. The result revealed that the improved cassava
variety farmers are more technically efficient than their local variety
counterparts at 1% level of significance. It is therefore recommended that the
government should train and educate the farmers especially the women so as to
increase the quality of their labour supply, and hence productivity. Also, the
government through the research institutes should establish demonstration farms
with the improved cassava variety. More so, policies that will stimulate youth
participation in cassava production should be formulated.
