The Effect Of Rising Food Price In The Productivity And Welfare Of Farm-Household Ikwano Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria.
ABSTRACT
The decline in the agriculture
sectors can be partly explained. Food prices have more than double between 2006
and mid 2008 creating major. distress among the poor in Nigeria but also
farmers among farm producers. This work stimulates the effect of rising food
prices in productivity and welfare of farm household in Ikwuano local
government Area, Abia State simple random sample of 60 farmers was taken and
data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as cross tabulation,
percentage, mean frequency distribution. Multiple regression analysis was used
to estimate the productivity and consumption of the study area. The effect of
rising food prices in productivity and welfare of farmer household, hectares
and more) would have gained as a group, and that the average gain is large for those
who gain but 69% of them in fact lose. the main category of poor household
negatively affect by the rise in prices is rural (representing 77% of all
losing poor households) both farmer and non-farmers. It was concluded that
capital and education play significant role in cassava productivity in the
study area. This study recommends that the farmer should be more enlightened so
to enable them have better resource.
