ABSTRACT
This study sets out to measure how the issuance of false audit opinions on financial statement of companies and organizations affect report user decisions. The study covered a sample size of 110 respondents drawn from Nigeria stock Exchange (NSE) selected quoted companies/firms and the federal Inland Revenue services (FIRS) offices in Ahia State, Nigeria. To achieve the objectives of the study, the data collectedfrom the questionnaire were analyzed using the simple percentage methods. While the hypothesis testing was conducted using the chi-square test and goodness of fit. In all, the study came up with the following findings: that there's significant relationship between false audit reporting, report users decision reliability, and poor quality audit; that poor audit quality increases the tendency of issuing false audit statement/reports; that false audit reporting widens the existing audit expectation gap; and that inadequate audit capacity by persons, individual and firms do not solely result infalse audit reporting etc. also, some recommendations were made from the findings of the study. They include the following: corporate entities and government agencies should ensure transparency in issuing financial/audit reports. Disclosures in corporate activities and operation should be done very early and timely so that users would make informed decisions. Much importance should be attached to audit reports public and private entities/establishments by the relevant authorities, etc. the researcher strongly believes that upon the implementation of the recommendations herein presented, the decision reliability of report users will be greatly enhanced.
