Abstract

This study was carried out in an effort to help solve the Psychological problems plaguing the teaching and learning of the mole concept. It investigated the effect ofcognitive mapping on student’s achievement in mole concept. A total ofone hundred andforty two (142) senior secondary school (SSII) students were used for the study. A pretest, post test control group design was used. The mole concept achievement test (MCAT) was used as an instrumentfor the study. It was hypothesized that cognitive map instructional strategy and gender as main effect and the interaction between these independent factors will not have significant effect on the students achievement in mole concept. Three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and graphical illustration. Result of the study revealed that there was no significant difference between the achievement of male and female students. The achievement means score of the treatment group was significantly higher than that ofthe control group. The interaction effect ofmethod and gendei on students achievement was not significant. It was recommended among others, that chemistry teachers and text book authors be trained on the construction ofcognitive map through seminars and workshop. ey words. Cognitive mapping, gender, achievement, mole concept.
