Resource Use Efficiency And Productivity Of Cocoyam Farmers In Umuahia South Local Government Area Of Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
The study aims at assessing the
resource use efficiency and productivity of cocoyam farmers in Umuahia South
Local government area of Abia State. The data were collected through the use of
well structured questionnaire. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select
a total of seventy two (72) cocoyam farmers for the study. The result of the
analysis which was carried out by use of regression techniques showed that the
coefficient of farm size, labour, fertilizer and cocoyam setts were positive
and significant determinant of cocoyam production while the coefficient of
capital was not significant. The results also indicate that resources (farm
size, fertilizer, cocoyam setts and capital) were inefficiently utilized by the
farmers in the study area. It indicates that none of the resources was
optimally utilized. It means that to achieve efficiency in resource use and
increase productivity, the cocoyam farmers are to reduce the amount of
resources used namely farm size, fertilizer, cocoyam sett, labour and capital.
Also, the extension services in the area need to he improved to educate the
farmers on how to optimally use the available resources as to achieve increased
productivity.
