ABSTRACT

The motivation to carry out this research was ignited by the rate at which people queue to make payment at Everyday Supermarket. The objective of the research is to work out modalities towards maximizing the service rate to customers in order to minimize waiting time of the customers. Primary data was collected for the work through observation method. The inter-arrival time of customers and the rate of service of the two cashiers was recorded. The average arrival time of customers and the average service time of the cashiers were obtained. The traffic intensity was computed and found to be 0.97 which indicates a high traffic in the system. The expected length of queue was found to be 31 customers and the expected number of customers in the system was found to be 3customers. The expected waiting time a customer spends was found to be 1mm. I second which means that 31 customers are waiting to be served and a customer have to wait for average of 1mm I second to be served. This explains why a long queue was found to be the low service rate of the cashier as compared to the arrival rate of customers.
