ABSTRACT

The study examined professionalism in home economics, its impediments and solutions in the tertiary institutions in Akwa-Ibom State. A survey research design was adopted for the study. Six research questions guided the study. Structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Mean and percentage were used for data analysis while t- test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significant. The findings among others revealed that there is no frequent appraisal of those already in the Home Economics profession hence no motivation for the pre professionals, the major impediment of professionalisms in Home Economics were: stereotype, inadequate funding, unqualified teachers in Home Economics, lack of code of ethics for the members. Possible solutions identified also include proper orientation on the course Home Economics in our institutions of learning, adequate training and exposure of Home Economics teachers at local and international level. Proper funding and provision of equipments/tools. Based on the discussion of the findings of the following recommendation among others were made: There should be proper orientation on what Home economics is all about and no more the study of cooking and study, it should be properly funded by the government since it is a course with saleable skill that can equip the student with job creation which is the major problems of Nigerian graduates today that turns out in thousand every year and also one of the stipulation on national policy of Nigerian education
