ABSTRACT
This study
investigated the potentials of soybean seed biodiesel as an alternative fuel
for diesel engines. It involved the production of biodiesel from soybean seed
and its engine performance study. It
started with the extraction of soybean oil from soybean seed and the soybean oil was transesterified with methanol
using clay doped with ionic liquid as a catalyst to obtain methyl esters (biodiesel)
of lower viscosity than the oil. The biodiesel possesses lower calorific value
compared to fossil diesel. The specific gravity of the biodiesel does not vary
much compared to fossil diesel. The kinematic viscosity is slightly higher than
that of the fossil diesel counterpart but it is however within the biodiesel
standard limits. The fuel properties such as kinematic viscosity, oxidation
stability, cetane number, density and specific gravity, flash and boiling
points, cloud and pour points, acid and methanol values, water contents and
heats of combustion (lower calorific values) were determined for the soybean
biodiesel and compared with those of fossil diesel and the ASTM recommended
values for biodiesel. Therefore, biodiesel produced from renewable and often
domestic sources, represents a more sustainable source of energy. The overall
analysis has shown that biodiesel produced from soybean oil has the potentials
as alternative fuel in conventional compression-ignition engines without any
modifications to the engines
