Perception of Librarians on the Use of ICT Facilities and Services as Alternative Strategy for Revenue Generation in Academic Libraries in Nigeria : A Study

ABSTRACT

The puipose of t e study was to investigate ICTfacilities and services as sources ofrevenue generation in academic libt aties in Niget ia using Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture Library, Unntdike andAbia State University Library, Uturu as cases in view. The research design used for the study, was a case study research design. The population ofthe study consisted of 60 librarians and Para-professional librarians in both libraries. Instrument usedfor data collection were questionnaire and a checklist. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics ofmean scores and standard deviation. Through observation checklist,findings ofthe study showed types ofICTfacilities available and those that are not available in both libraries. The study revealed perceptions of librarians about ICTfacilities and services as alternative strategy for revenue generation in academic libraries. The findings showed that lack of ICT maintenance and support in the ICT department, frequent changes in technologies, inadequate staff with technical knowhow of ICT in the department among others as problems that militate against the use ofICTfacilities and services as alternative strategyfor revenue generation in ICT departments of the libraries. The study recommended that adequate funding of academic libraries should be prioritized by Nigeria government to enable academic libraries purchase required and adequate ICTfacilities for their operations, that academic libraries should have a policy that will distinctively established ICT department as point where ICTfacilities will be utilize strategically as alternative sources of revenue generation, that academic libraries and their administrators should priorities the employment of personnel who are experts in computer hardware and software and computer engineers to enable the section render efficient and effective services with the use ofIC1 facilities to stimulatefund generation among others.
