ABSTRACT

This study investigate the use ofaudio-visual materialsfor improved learning outcome among secondary school students using Government College Umuahia and Ibeku High School as case study. This study is guided by five (5) objectives andfive (5) research questions. This i esearch adopts descriptive research survey and the instrument usedfor the study is a questionnaire developed to cover the research questions. The population ofthe study is one thousand five hundred and eight-three (1583). Two Hundred and twenty-two (222) respondents were selected using simple random sampling techniques from Government College and Ibeku High School for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The study found that the two schools examined showed a strongly agreement response on relevanceforthe use ofaudiovisual materials for improved learning outcome as encourages participation in learning, stimulating interest in education. Also, the study revealed the effects ofthe use ofaudio visual materials on the academic performance of secondary students as making learning more practical and permanent, increasing the academic performance ofthe student. This study shows there is high extent on the use audiovisual materials for improved learning outcome ofthe school under study. The studyfound out the factors that militates against effective use of audio visual materials for improved learning outcome and also propose ways of improving the use of audiovisual materials for improved learning outcome. The recommendations include school authorities should invest more in the area ofprocuring electronic materials such as computers, projectors, Video CD player and also organize In-trainingfor teachers to keep them abreast with new trends in the use ofaudio visual materials.
