ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to ascertain the nutrition knowledge, breakfast consumption pattern and prevalence ofobesity among undergraduates ofMichael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, Nigeria. The study adopted a cross sectional survey using a well-structured, validated and pre-tested questionnaire. A sample size of 433 which was determined using Taro Yamane formula was used for the study. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used for the study. Data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 25.0. descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the findings revealed that (47.0%) ofthe respondents were within the ages of 20-23 years, 67.2% were females, 91.4% were single, 71.9% were funded by their parents, 64.2% had good nutrition knowledge. 58.4% and 58.1% ofthe respondents ate cakes and rice respectively in low proportion, while 63.3% ate protein rich food, meat products and milk/vcgctable oil respectively in low proportion. 78.1% and 77.7% of the respondents consumed fruits and nuts respectively in low proportion. 60.0% of the students had a normal'body weight of 18.5-24.9 kg/m2,17.2% were overweight, 12.6% were underweight, and 10.2% were obese. This study shows that there was no significant relationship (p>0.05) amongst the respondents' nutrition knowledge, breakfast consumption pattern and prevalence of obesity. This study recommends a multi-sectorial approach in nutrition knowledge, breakfast consumption pattern and prevalence of obesity among undergraduates of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, Nigeria.
