ABSTRACT
The shock an economy can witness
due to the fluctuations of prices of goods and services over time and the need
to have knowledge of inflationary trends prompted this study. As noted, some
causes of inflation are increase in wages and levying of high taxes. In this
study, inflation rates series were examined and the times domain approach to
time series was used. The buys ballot procedure indicated that the
multiplicative model was appropriate and a linear trend equation was fitted to
the series using the Chain Base Estimation (CBE) approach. The seasonal indices
indicated that there is little or no presence of seasonality under the period
of study. A 12 months forecast was made indicating a high rate of inflation at
the beginning of the year as compared to the immediate past months and
subsequent decline as the year moves toward the end. Among all measures of
control, it was recommended that productivity should be encouraged and
increased.
