ABSTRACT
Microbiological analysis of wheat flour sold
in Umuahia was investigated 12 samples from 5 different locations were
obtained. Five different bacterial species were identilied in this survey. They
included Bacillus, Staphyloccus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella. They
fungal isolates were Aspergillus, Fusarium, Alternaria and Cladosporium. The
Total Bacteria Count (TBC) revealed the highest count from sample I1 (12.5 c 10
cf u/ml) while the lowest count was observed from sample 12 (6.6 x 10 4
cfu/ml). The highest Fungal Count (TFC) was observed from sample 2 (C,.3 x to'
cf u/ml) while the least count were observed from sample 8 (1.2 x 10 cfu/ml).
The percentage occurrence of the organisms varied in the different samples used
for this survey. Fungal isolates which included Aspergillus, had the highest
percentage occurrence while Cladosporium had the least percentage occurrence.
Bacteria isolates which includes Staphylococcus and Bacillus had the highest
percentage occurrence ( I 00%) while Salmonella, had the least percentage
occurrence. This results show that microorganisms which included bacteria and
fungi were present in the samples of wheal flour obtained for the analysis
