Knowledge, Attitudes And Practice Of Exclusive Breastfeeding Among Women In Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State
ABSTRACT
This study examines the knowledge attitude and
practice of exclusive breastfeeding among women in Mbaitoli Local Government
Area. The study population comprises of three hundred women in the study area
and data was collected by means of questionnaires. From the findings it was
observed that 21 % had low scores, 41 % had average scores and 12% high scores
in the knowledge accessment of exclusive breastfeeding. Also their attitude
scores showed that about 36% had low scores, 47% average scores and 16% had
high scores. Only 10% of the respondents breastfed exclusively for the first
six months of infants' life. The other respondents introduced one supplements
or the other at different ages before the infant was six months. Their practice
was also scored and 10% had high scores, 44% average scores and 45% low scores.
Their practice scores were correlated with their knowledge and attitude scores
to show if the three variables are dependent on each other, and a high positive
correlation was seen among them showing that each of the variables are
dependent on each other. In view of the findings, it is suggested that more
work needs to be done to enhance favorable knowledge and attitudes towards
exclusive breastfeeding among women, as this will help to encourage their
practice of exclusive breastfeeding.
