Knowledge, Attitude And Practice Of Nutrient Supplementation Among Women Of Reproductive Age In Ahiara, Ahiazu L. G. A. Imo State:- Madu, Blessing U
ABSTRACT
The
study evaluated the knowledge and practices of nutrient supplementation among
women of reproductive age in Ahiara, Ahiara L.G.A., Imo State. The study used a
cross sectional study design. The population of the study were women of
reproductive age (15-55 years) of aage in Ahiara, Ahiara L.G.A., Imo State. The
data for the study was realized using a structured questionnaire which was
validated by experts in human nutrition and dietetics. The data realized were
analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that most women (42.4%)
of the women were traders, majority (60.9%) were married, 56.2% had secondary
education and almost half 46.7% were earning between N80,000-N100,000. The
result showed that more than half (58.3%) of the women had poor nutritional
knowledge, 77.7% of them took dietary supplements for medical reasons and more
than half (55.7%) of the supplements were prescribed by pharmacist. On
anthropometric status, 39.1% of the women were overweight while 57.2% were at
risk of obesity. The study concluded that even though the women had poor
nutritional knowledge, they consumed dietary supplements regularly. The study
recommended that there is need to create awareness on the functions and use of
nutritional supplements so as to help persons who use them to be fully aware of
their functions.
