ABSTRACT
This study examined Information Needs and
Information Seeking Behaviour ofSecondary School Teachers in Ikwuano L.G.A
using Awom-na-Ebo and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike
Demonstration Secondary School as Survey study. The study was guided byfive
research questions. The research design was descriptive survey with a
population of 127 comprising of 60 staffofAwom-na-Ebo Senior Technical School,
Amawom and 67 staff of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Demonstration
School, Umudike. A complete census was used because the population was
manageable, therefore no sampling was used. The instrumentfor data collection
was questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed in line withfour point likert
rating scale. One hundred and twelve copies (127) copies ofthe questionnaire
were administered ofwhich a hundred and sixteen (116) was correctlyfilled and
returned showing 91.3 % response rate. Data was analyzed using mean and
standard deviation. Thefindings ofthe study revealed revealed the different
types ofinformation needs ofthe teachers to include: academic and research
information, current affairs information, personal health information, sports
information, and business information. The study also elucidates the
information seeking behaviour of the teachers to include: browsing directly
from the shelve, discussing and seeking for help from library staff, asking a
fellow teacherfor help, consulting the catalogue and browsing through the
internet. Furthermore, the finding revealed that teachers were duly satisfied
in utilizing textbooks, reference materials, radio, television, internet
audio-visuals and Journals, on the other hand, they were dissatisfaction in
their use of electronic information databases and magazine. Also, the study
putforth poor service ofthe library staff, lack ofneededmaterials, negative
attitude of the librarian, poorpowersupply, poor conducive environment and lack
ofknowledge on how to use the catalogue by teachers, as barriers to the way/manner
through which teachers sourcefor information. Lastly, the study submitted that
teachers should be trained in the use ofthe library catalogue, professional
librarians should show more professional attitude towards the teachers, the
library environment should be made conducivefor the library users, adequate
power supply should be provided to the library, the library should be stocked
with relevant materials and library staff should change their approach to work,
as strategies to enhance their information sourcing capabilities of the
teachers.
