ABSTRACT
The study examined the Management of audio visual
mateiials in piivate broadcasting stations (a ease study of Vision Africa I'M
Umuahia, Abia State), lhe specific objectives of the study are; to ascertain
the availability ol audio-visual materials in Vision Africa I'M, Umuahia, to
examine the methods ol managing ol audio visual materials in Vision Africa I'M,
to dctciminc the extent to which management of audio visual material affect the
operation ol Vision Ahica I'M and to highlight the factors militating against
the management ol audio visual mateiials in Vision Africa I'M. To achieve the
set objectives ol the study, suivey reseaich design was used, lhe population of
the study is 15 respondents which also constitute the sample size. Hence, the
sample technique used here was complete census. The data were collected through
primary sources with the aid of wellstructured questionnaire as research
instrument. Ihc hypotheses were analyzed using mean score and percentage. The
mean was determined using a 4point rating scale, fhc mid-point of 2.5 criterion
mean was accepted as a positive response. The findings revealed that there is
high level of availability of audio visual material in vision Africa FM such as
textbooks, fictions, journals, reference resources, audio-visual resources,
newspapers and e-resources. The findings also revealed that appraising
audiovisual material before selection, acquisition of audiovisual material,
arrangement and description of audiovisual material and preservation of audiovisual
material are the methods of managing audio-visual materials in Vision Africa
FM. It showed that appraising audiovisual material before selection,
acquisition of audiovisual material, arrangement and description of audiovisual
material and preservation of audiovisual material affects the operation of
Vision Africa FM. Hie study went further to show that inadequate funding of the
media center, lack of management equipment, management attitude towards
management, Management attitude towards management, lack of competent manpower
in management, harsh environmental condition, inadequate infrastructures, lack
of preservation policy and absence of c-cquipmcnt for management are factors
militating against the management of audio visual materials in Vision Africa
FM. fhc study among other things recommends broadcasting stations should
increase the level of availability of audiovisual material in their
broadcasting station. 1 hey should make available the materials such as
textbooks, fictions, journals, ncwspapeis, c-icsouices etc for effective
operation oftheir activities. Vision Africa I M should effectively manage their
audiovisual information resources in order to increase their performance.
