ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to provide information on infant and childhood mortality in relation with the demographic and socio- economic indicators which may be relevant to better control of infact and childhood mortality in our society (Nigeria at large). The work examine the distribution of surveyed women according to their background characteristics which are age, level of education, region of residence and states of residence. The work discuss the implication of mortality levels trends and differentials in our country. A study was carried out in Nigeria (1991 census report) by the National Population Commission (N PC) Abia State. The findings of the study has shown a considerable variation in infant and childhood mortality between different socio-economic groups. In the mean percentage analysis, the findings revealed that: children born to mothers with higher education experience lower mortality. The southwestern region experienced the lowest differentials than the other regions. In the states, Akwa-Ibom experience the lowest infant and child mortality. Generally, there is still an increase in infant and childhood mortality in Nigeria.
