ABSTRACT

 Indigenous textiles constitute one of the most important basic needs of man apart from food an shelter. This study aimed at finding out the indigenous knowledge of Akwete fabric production in Abia State factors affecting indigenous production of Akwete fabric were determined. The problems associated with the production of Akwete fabrics were identified. Measures for improving the knowledge and skill needed for the production of Akwete fabric were also highlighted. Three firms were selected using purposi\Je sampling method. Validated pilot, tested, structured questionnaires were administered to the firms. One hundred completed questionnaires were returned. Frequencies, simple percentages and mean were used in analyzing the data. Result revealed that. one of the predominate factors that affects the production of Akwete fabric was that people show preference for the imported fabrics since they are lighter in weight than Akwete fabrics result also showed that insufficient man power was one of the problems encountered in the production of Akwete Fabrics. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that local textiles industries, which aim at developing indigenous textile technology should be encouraged though funding by the government. It will also help to reduce our preference for imported fabrics.
