ABSTRACT
The study dealt with the impact of electronic
banking on the Deposit money Banks services in Nigeria, various components of
e- banking products and services given its problems and benefits. Consequent to
previous views that technology was a mere support or of little significance and
compounded by the fact that there were problems peculiar to the use of
technology, this study therefore sought to determine if electronic banking has
so far had any significant impact on the Nigeria banking sector. All the (16)
consolidated banks in Urnuahia North Local Government Area in Abia State was
used as case study. In achieving the objectives of the study, data was
collected using a check list type, multiple choice question and few open ended
questionnaire, and also interview. Out of 80 questionnaires distributed, only
68 were returned. The simple technique used was multi-stage technique. In
carrying out the analysis, simple descriptive statistical tools such as tables,
means, frequency, simple percentages was used. The test statistics used in
testing hypothis was chi-square. 'Based on findings, it was found that the
introduction of electronic banking has had a significant impact on the Deposit
money Bank services and operations such as easy and quicker information,
leading to increase in banks profit margin, better form of accountability, and
integrated banking. It was also found that ATM, point of sale terminal, debit!
credit card, cash card, inter switch, internet alert are the various component
of e-banking product that is mostly available in the bank. Also power failure,
poor communication network, and lack of capitals, fraudulent practices are the
major problems that are found to have affected the performance activities of
e-banking. The hypothesis tested shows that the existence of electronic banking
has brought about immense benefits to deposit money banks and Nigeria economy. recommendations were made that there should be provision of infrastructural
facilities and maintenance of such equipment's. Banks should put up adequate
information security policy to protect their customers and their selves from
possible risk. There should be also a computer literacy training for every bank
staff and adequate control measures for eradication of fraud.
