ABSTRACT
Regardless of the size or type of
business, every organizations most important asset is its human resources.
According to Imaga (2005) human resources management is the effective
utilization of personnel in an organization to achieve annual objectives of the
firm as well as the satisfaction and development of employees. Okpoko (2006)
maintains that human resource management refers to the policies and practices
required to carry out the "people" or human resource aspects of
management position. Human resource management is a set of programmes,
function, and activities designed to maximize both personnel and organizational
goal (Imaga, 2005). Human resource approach is relatively new in the management
of people. The term became popular during the early 1970's as research in the
behavioural sciences showed that managing people as resources or as human
beings with feelings and emotions rather than as a factor of production could
result in real benefits to both the organization and the employees. Human
resource management is of great importance to the general developments and
growth of the hospitality industry, these personnel experts, managers, and
practitioners should hold it as a necessary prerequisite for which
organizational efforts should be synergized to ensure adequate attention for a
better use of other resources especially capital. The hospitality industry
should also realize that with the increasing competition and complexity in
business, more time should be devoted to effective human resources management
to achieve desired goals it is very obvious that Nigeria is blessed with
abundant human resources. The need to modify, sharpen and 2 improve the human
resources is very paramount. The essence and goal of education from its
holistic perspective is still the same essence of developing human resources.
