ABSTRACT

This study investigates the relationship between hotel waste disposal practices and revenue generation in Umuahia Metropolis. With a sample population of 300 respondents, a descriptive survey research design was employed to gather data on waste disposal practices and revenue generation. Research questions were analyzed using frequency, percentages and mean distribution, while the hypotheses were examined using multiple regression and Spearman correlation. The findings reveal that the majority of hotels in Umuahia Metropolis employ various waste disposal methods, including landfill, recycling, reuse, and incineration. The mean ratings for these methods were generally acceptable, with landfill and reuse scoring 3.2, recycling scoring 2.9, and incineration scoring 3.4 on the 5-point rating scale. Also, the study also identified challenges faced by hotels in revenue generation, such as increased disposal costs, limited space, inefficient waste management practices, limited revenue generation opportunities, and a lack of awareness and education. These challenges received mixed mean ratings ranging from 2.6 to 3.3. The regression analysis demonstrated that the waste disposal methods variables explained approximately 29% of the total variation observed in hotel revenue generation. However, the adjusted R-square was employed to account for the inflation of the R-square value due to the number of independent variables, indicating that the fair influence of the waste disposal methods on revenue generation was 29%. The statistical analysis further revealed that the relationship between waste disposal methods and revenue generation was not statistically significant. In conclusion, while hotels in Umuahia Metropolis implement various waste disposal practices, the study suggests that these methods alone may not significantly impact revenue generation. To enhance revenue generation, hotels should explore diverse strategies beyond waste disposal, improve waste management practices, conduct market research, and establish collaborations with local stakeholders. This study contributes to the understanding of hotel waste management and revenue generation dynamics, providing valuable insights for hoteliers and stakeholders in the Umuahia Metropolis.
