ABSTRACT xii Decoctions are used in the management of diseases right from the beginning of time. Since the composition ofthese decoctions are not specific, they could contain bioactive components that can be effective in the management of other ailments thus warranting this studies aimed at determination ofescherichiacoli (e.coli) activity and unsaponified matter content of coffee (coffea arabica) leafdecoction formula (john u tisane). The decoction was used for the unsaponified matter and E.coli inhibition. The result showed dose dependent decrease 1ml 29.67±0.58, dilution 19.00±1.00, !4 dilution ofExtract, 10.33±0.58, 1/8 dilution 4.00±l.00 while 1/16 and 1/32 dilution both showed no inhibition at all. The result of the unsaponified matter showed that it contained 1.46±0.02mg/mg. In conclusion, the decoction showed antimicrobial activity while having unsaponified matter.
