Gender Inequality In Home Economics Programmes: A Case Study Of Three Higher Institutions In Aria State
ABSTRACT
The primary purpose of this study
was to determine if there is gender inequality in Home Economics Programmes in
three higher institutions in Abia Slate. The study looked into the concept of
gender, concept of inequality, effect of gender inequality, those factors that
cause gender inequality, perceptions of parents about Home Economics
Programmes. study adopted a survey
design using questionnaire to elicit information from the respondents. The
respondents were students of Home Economics from the three higher institutions
in Abia State ( Michael Okpara University of' Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State
University Uturu Umualmia Campus and Abia State College of Education Arochukwu).
The instruments was validated by three experts in Home Economic Department. The
reliability of the instruments through test retest method was computed using
Pearson product moment correlation which yielded a co-efficient of 0.84. the
t-lest was used to test the two hypothesis. In the finding, there is gender
inequality in 1-Ionic Economics Programmes. Parental influence and lack of' appropriate
information were the highest factors that cause gender inequality in home economic programmes. From lime findings,
gender inequality leads to under. representation of men in Home Economic
Programmes. Based on the finding , recommendations were made.
