Extractable Iron, Zinc, Manganese, And Coffer In Cubitermes Mounds In Selected Farmlands In Southeastern Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Basic properties and the status of extractable iron, copper,
zinc and mangenese in normal soils and. the cubitermes mounds taken from
Umudike and Ameke (Abia State), Afikpo (Ebonyi State) and Akamkpa (Cross River
State) were determined, using three major extractant solutions namely,
hydrochloric acid, Ammonium Acetate and a mixed solution of Ammoniurn Acetate
and ethylene diamine tetra chioric acid. Results showed significantly (O.05)
higher proportion of clay 31.6%, silt 19.0%, and organic matter 6.7% and higher
pH 5.6% available phosphorous 22.5 mgkg', effective cation exchange capacity
11.9 Cmolkg' and total exchangeable bases 10.0 Cmolkg' cubitermes mound than in
the surrounding topsoils. NH4OAc + EDTA extracted highest contents of
extractable iron 568.5 mgkg 1 and Zinc 9.7mgkg', while 0.1N HCJ and NH4OAc
extracted higher values of Mangenese 38.lmgkg' and Copper 17.5mgkg 1
respectively. The results Showed that the concentrations of available Iron,
Zinc, Mangenese, and Copper varied significantly (P
