ABSTRACT
It is important to make some
remarks about soil formation so that this audience will appreciate the linkage
between soil formation and soil fertility. Soil formation Soils are formed by
the interaction of soil forming factors and soil forming processes. Five
factors are universally acceptable to be responsible for soil formation and
they include parent material, climate, living organisms, topography and time.
Climate and living organisms determine the rate of chemical and biological
reactions in the soil and thus regulate soil forming processes (pedogenic
processes). Parent material Parent material is the unconsolidated material
resulting from the weathering of rock materials. Physical and chemical
weathering processes lead to the physical breakdown and chemical decomposition
of rock materials resulting in in the unconsolidated material called parent
material which is the initial material from which soils are formed. The end
product of weathering is Saprolte or regolith (parent material) of the soil
which may be formed in place or by material transported by wind or water.
