ABSTRACT

 A study of the Iron and Zinc status of soils of southeastern Nigeria was carried out using soils from 30 different locations within three states (Abia. Imo and Akwa Ibom State). The objectives of the study were to evaluate the extractable Iron and Zinc, using coca cola as extractant and to compare the normal and diet brands of coca cola as extractants for available zinc and iron in the soils of southeastern Nigeria. Soil sample were collected at 0 to 30 cm depth and analyzed for Fe and Zn using two brands of coca cola as an extractant. Results showed that the soils are sandy loam in texture, strongly acid (4.3-5.9) and low in available nutrients. Also results showed that extractable Zinc ranged from 0.37-39.28mg/kg with a mean of 3.14mg/kg while extractable Iron ranged from 124.22-3 173.88mg/kg with a mean value of 1115 mg/kg. Normal coke extracted significantly (p more Iron than diet coke. Extractable Zinc did not differ statistically between the two brands of coca cola. Extractable iron and zinc did not correlate significantly with soil properties.
