ABSTRACT

The primary goal in the establishment of universities in any country of the world is to meet the challenges of their environments. In a country like Nigeria with her multi ethnic structure, universities are not only for production of eminent level manpower but also for the promotion of national consciousness, cultural integration and unity, and in addition fostering in the students appropriate values and attitudes for psychological wellness (Ekennia 2010). Among the various activities in the university system, guidance and counselling programme lends itself nicely in facilitating the realization of the set goals for which universities are established. Guidance is the process of helping an individual to understand himself and his world. Counseling is an interactive process conjoining the counselee, who is vulnerable and who needs assistance and the counselor who is trained and educated to give this assistance, the goal of which is to help the counselee to learn to deal more effectively with himself and the reality of his environment (Makinde 1984). The term University Guidance programme refers to the totality of guidance and counselling activities that is run in the university to facilitate learning activities as well as improve or maintain adjustive capacity of the students. The success of university guidance programme depends among other things on regular and effective evaluation of the guidance programme.
