ABSTRACT

 One of the major challenges facing the industry is corrosion. Corrosion attacks every component at every stage in the life of every industrial equipment. Synthetic Corrosion inhibitors, being costly and with its associated environmental concern is currently used to combat this problem. Following this concern is a search for natural corrosion inhibitors which can compensate for the lapses of the synthetic ones. The inhibitive effects of onion oncorrosion of mild steel was studied using gravimetric methods. Results of the Gravimetric analysis reveal that the inhibitor efficiency of Onion (Allium Cepa) extract is proportional to the inhibitor concentration up to a critical concentration observed to be 2m1/100ml. The average optimum efficiency observed was 83i56% while that predicted by the quadratic regression model used was 89.39%. Exposure time and the inhibitor efficiency werefound to have effect on the efficiency of the inhibitor compared to the inhibitor concentration. Therefore Allium Cepa extract is suitable for use as corrosion inhibitor for sweet corrosion of mild steel.
