ABTRACT
The study investigated the brooler marketing in Abia State. The study was designed to determine the marketing channel and the various middlemen involved and broder marketing, estimate the cost and returns using marketing margin approach, identify constraints affecting broiler marketing, and compare the prices of broiler urban and rural markets in the study area. For the purpose of the study, three categories of broiler marketers were studied; producers and marketers; marketer only; and processors and marketers. Cross — sectional and time — series data, which covered a period of six months were collected. Basically, 70 broiler marketers were purposively and randomly sampled. Purposive sample was used to select 36 marketers from the first category, 10 marketers from the third category and 4 major markets in the second category while random sample was used to select 24 marketers from the 4 major markets. Simple statistical tools such as percentages, average, marketing margin and correlation coefficience were used for data analysis. The findings show that most of the live and processed broilers were supplied to the state capital through Aba, Umuahia, Obowo, Mbaisand Enugu. Also, the marketing channel consists of the producers, wholesalers, processors, retailers and consumers. It was found that the correlation result shows inefficiency in broiler marketing system. Thus, indicating frice fluctuations and also inefficient marketing margin. Finally, the problems of broiler marketing indicates: high cost of transportation, lack of standardized measure of weight in the market, high cost of feeding and high cost of broiler purchase. It was recommended that the private sector should be encouraged to invest in commercial feed formulation, transportation and weighing balance facilities so as to guarantee supplies all the year round. Government should educate and encourage broiler marketers on how to weigh their birds in (kg) before selling to their customers. This will help to reduce price fluctuations in the study area.
