Abstract
The study investigated the effect
of peer tutoring on mathematic achievement and retention among Senior Secondary
School Students in Abia State, Nigeria. The study used a pre-test, post-test
quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control groups. The study's
population consisted of4481 Abia State Secondary School II Students. The
study's sample consisted oftwo intact classes of 70 SS II students from two
purposively selected schools. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided
the investigation. The researcher designed a 50-item multiple-choice
Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) to collect data. The instrument had a
consistency coefficient of 0.78, calculated by Kuder Richardson (K-R 20). The
research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation, while the
research hypotheses were tested using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) at a
significance level of 0.05. The study's findings revealed that peer tutoring
has a significant impact on students’ achievement and retention in mathematics.
Following the findings ofthis study, it was advised that mathematics and
science teachers incorporate peer tutoring into the teaching ofmathematics and
