Abstract
The study examined the effects of contingency
management and self-control techniques on reduction of excessive intake of
alcohol among university undergraduates in Imo State. Two research questions
and two null hypotheses were formulated for the study. The study adopted
quasi-experimental research design. The population ofthe study comprised 92
male andfemale undergraduate students. The sample size comprised 92 subjects
which includes 30 experimental 1 (contingency management therapy), 31 experimental
2 (self control technique) and 31 control group with excessive alcohol intake
behaviour tendencies selected using enumerative census sampling method. Four
instruments were used for data collection namely Undergraduate Personal Data
Inventory (UPDI), Excessive Alcohol Drinking Identification Questionnaire
(EADQ), Excessive Alcohol Drinking History Questionnaire (EADHQ) and Drinking
Cessation Contract Form (DCCFA). The validated instruments were tested for
reliability using Product Moment Correlation Coefficient which yielded
reliability indices of 0.79, 0.84 and 0.81 respectively. The data collected
were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research
questions. The null hypotheses were tested with t test of independent at 0.05
level of significance. The results showed that contingency management therapy
has positive effect on the reduction of excessive intake of alcohol among
university undergraduates, that there was a significant difference between the
mean reduction of intake of alcohol scores of subjects exposed to contingency
management and those in the control group at post test, thatself-control
technique has positive effect on the reduction of excessive intake of alcohol
among undergraduates. Based on thefindings, it was recommendation that
psychologists, guidance counsellors and lecturers should be aware of the
complex determinants of alcohol intake behaviour and the possible environmental
contingencies and selfcontrol techniques ofmaintaining them. Keywords:
